With Alexader Ovechkin (20) and Marian Gaborik (24) already on the team, you'd think the last thing the Tigers would draft is a couple of skilled Left wingers. But that is exactly what they did this past Sunday.
GM McEwan "Our plan for the draft was to take the best available player, regardless of position. And both picks happened to be LW."
In the 1st round (28th overall)the Tigers selected Brett MacLean from the Oshawa Generals. Brett tallied 100 points (47g, 53a) with the Generals in 06/07, playing alongside 16 year old phenom John Tavares.
Many scouts dismissed Brett's production as simply a product of playing with Tavares, but the Tigers see it a little differently. GM McEwan "The way we see it, he did score 47 goals and no matter who was setting him up he still had to find an open spot and put the puck in the net."
With their second pick (58th overall) the Tigers selected Swiss forward Luca Cunti. Luca may be one of the most skilled forwards in the draft, but comes with many questions marks. Will he come to North America? can he deal with the more physical game here? is he too one dimensional?
GM McEwan "Luca is a bit of a risky pick, but we felt the reward if he turns out like we think he can, definately outways risk."
The Tigers did not have a 3rd round pick as it was traded to the Havoc early in the year for Ville Nieminen.
