Brief Overview:
The Anaheim Tigers entered the NHA via expansion in the summer of 2000, along with the Calgary Wildcats. They have had a rough time over the years, compiling a 97-240-53 record over their first five seasons in operation.
With low win totals comes high drafts picks, however, and the Tigers have had their share of trips of the draft podium early in the league's annual entry drafts. In both 2003 and 2004 the franchise held the first overall pick for finishing dead last in the NHA standings in both seasons, and chose goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and winger Alexander Ovechkin, respectivly. Along with free agent signing Zdeno Chara and first-ever draft pick Marian Gaborik (2nd overall in 2000), these players form the young core of the Anaheim Tigers.
GM Joe McEwan, who took over the team in the offseason of 2006, will now look at realistically getting this team into the playoffs. They've never been to the post-season, but did have their most successful season recently with 31 wins in 2005-06. With a steady influx of young talent coming up the pipeline in the future, the club looks poised to be a contender for years to come once everything gels. Time will tell.
