Brief Overview:
The Atlanta Rockets were welcomed to the NHA via expansion in the summer of 2000. Along with fellow expansion team the Anaheim Tigers, the Rockets chose their roster through the expansion draft. After chosing their players from the other NHA franchises' lower-teir players, and selecting 4th overall in the entry draft where they chose Scott Hartnell, the Rockets were ready for action.
That first season was filled with ups and downs, but mostly downs. With a 13-59-10 record and their top scorer being Steve Kariya with 28 points, the team was off to a slow start, but a start nonetheless. The Rockets' record in the standings has continued to dwell near the bottom including their majorly disappointing 2003-04 season which saw them dip down to 32 points.
Prior to the 2006-07 season, Jason Supnet was hired as the new GM in town, and fans are very optomistic that he can lead the team to the holy grail.
With low success comes high draft picks, however, and the franchise has chosen in the top four in each year of its exsistence. With players like Ilya Kovalchuk, Rick Nash, Eric Staal and the emerging Evgeni Malkin in fold, one has to think that success is just around the corner for the Rockets. And once they turn that corner, look out.
