Brief Overview:
There is no doubt that the Montreal Patriots have been known as a team that has performed below average most years, usually missing the playoffs by a handful of points. Yes, the Pats have missed the playoffs for five straight seasons, but there are very good reasons to be hopeful for the club in the near future.
In the first couple of years for Montreal, the club traded the vast majority of its draft picks in an attempt to achieve immediate success. Results didn't come easily, although they did manage to make it to the Orr Conference finals in 2000 after their second slightly above-average regular season. The team was stacked with aging veterans such as Phil Housley and Mark Messier, and with no top prospects in the fold the Patriots quickly got set on their plunge into being a bottom-10 team in the standings year after year.
Now, however, fans are feeling excited again in Montreal. The club has drafted high and drafted well, with young players like Ryan Suter, Brent Seabrook, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Luc Bourdon among others. Team captain Sergei Fedorov is aging but still affective, and 2005 UFA signing Daniel Alfredsson leads the offense.
New GM Pat Green will now look to guide the young club into the playoffs and beyond. And once they are there, the Montreal Patriots look to be a contender for a long, long time.
