Brief Overview:
The Pittsburgh Mammoths, along with the Calgary Wildcats, entered the NHA via expansion in the off-season of 1999. The Mammoths picked up some key players, including an underachieving Shane Doan, but were very far from resembling a playoff-competitive team out of the gate. Pittsburgh won the coin flip to pick first in the 1999 NHA Entry Draft, and chose Pavel Brendl, who at the time looked to be future top scorer. They went on to trade many of their draft picks in the coming years, including the 2001 draft when that year alone their picks - which belonged to other teams via trades - were used to select Mike Komisarek, Peter Budaj, Ray Emery, Mike Smith and Cristobal Huet.
The future does look bright, however, with 2003 first rounder Dion Phaneuf patrolling the blueline, and young forwards such as Mike Cammaleri, Alexander Semin and Benoit Pouliot. It is still an upward battle, but with the right direction from long-time GM Steve Budgell, the Mammoths will make their first playoff appearance sooner rather than later.
