Brief Overview:
The Washington Americans are one of the original NHA teams with the franchise being founded in 1998 by general manager Mike Turner. After a shaky first season which saw the franchise finish dead last in the standings, the Americans are usually near the top of the standings in the Howe conference.
Led by captain Jarome Iginla, the Americans have always always blended veteran talent with good up-and-comers. In 2001-02 the team made it all the way to the Cup finals, losing to Winnipeg Warriors in 6 games. The 2003-04 season was not as successful as other years, as the team missed the playoffs which prompted the firing of head coach Pat Quinn.
In 2006, just days before the entry draft, the Americans made a deal which saw 1999-00 NHA Rookie of the year Scott Gomez head to the LA Predators, and had the Americans picking 1st in the draft for the second time in franchise history. They went on to choose Nicklas Backstrom out of Sweden.
With a salary cap now in place, it will be up to GM Turner to keep the team's payroll in check as they look towards their first NHA Championship in the coming years.
